Meet Edwin – A Wellroot Scholarship Recipient

The Wellroot Family Services Scholarship Program recognizes students for their community service, academic performance, and demonstrated leadership and participation in school. In the 2020-2021 award year, over 4,400 students from across the USA applied for a Wellroot scholarship. Wellroot’s scholarship fund was made possible by the generosity of countless donors over the years who cared deeply for children and chose to create a lasting legacy. Most scholarship awards require applicants to have a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Additionally, some funds also give preference to individuals who have received assistance services from Wellroot Family Services.

This past year, Wellroot awarded $199,000 to 56 students who met the award criteria; Edwin was one of those students. Last school year, Edwin was an honor student at Booker T. Washington High School in his senior year. He had made the honor roll for two semesters and was busy applying to colleges when he found out about the scholarship through Raising Expectations, a nonprofit that helps children from disadvantaged communities be successful in school. Edwin is Autistic and has been a part of this program since first grade.

Edwin is an amazing young man. As a senior, he tutored the elementary students at Raising Expectations in math and science and helped Bethune Elementary School with their community garden.  Edwin is a published author, having written a book as part of a program called Boys Books and Brotherhood about his experience with Autism to help and inspire other autistic children. The book, Jirou’s Journey to Friendship, is available on Amazon. Edwin is a gifted illustrator, and painter which is why he has chosen a career in graphic design.

Wellroot is honored to be able to support Edwin and 55 other college students like him. As colleges across the country begin heading back to class, in-person and virtual, won’t you join all of us at Wellroot in praying for a safe, successful academic school year for these students!
