How Kanisha Fought Becoming Another Statistic

How Kanisha Fought Becoming Another Statistic

Here at Wellroot, we celebrate the incredible youth in our Transitional and Independent Living Program every day. Youth like Kanisha who entered our program at age 17 and has spent the past several years pairing Wellroot services with her own hard work and tenacity to reach her goals!

When we first met Kanisha, she was starting cosmetology school while also working at a hair salon. It wasn’t long before she graduated from cosmetology school and secured her own salon downtown where her talent is on full display as she works with clients. She’s been so successful that she has already saved enough money to purchase a new home, hosting a housewarming party just two weeks ago.

“I am most excited to see that Kanisha didn’t become a statistic of foster care,” said Donita Noel-Green, Independent Living Program life coach. “Kanisha is a go-getter. She’s accomplished so much at such a young age.”

Kanisha’s next dream is a career in dentistry, and she’s approaching it just like she does everything else – with passion and ambition. After establishing her salon, Kanisha went back to school to become a dental hygienist, gaining both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Now her sights are set on a PhD, so she can officially earn the title of Dr. Moore!

GivingTuesday is just around the corner! It is through generous donors like you that Wellroot can provide a home for youth like Kanisha and support services like skills training needed to become a successful adult. If you would like to support our mission, please #GiveHome and donate at Giving Tuesday – Wellroot Family Services today!

About Our Residential Programs

Transitional and Independent Living Programs

We shepherd young adults as they transition from foster care to adulthood. Our programs provide 24-hour support as well as community-based housing to each youth.  Wellroot offers ongoing life skills development, including financial literacy, tutoring, personal development, career development and education about nutrition and health. As part of both programs, we guide residents through the process of earning their high school diploma or GED and offer assistance entering college or trade school. Learn more

Family Housing Program

Families accepted into our program are serious about leveraging the support we offer and gaining the skills needed to ensure their long-term sustainability upon completion of our program. We provide housing and financial assistance to these families, removing the barrier of homelessness by helping them move toward self-sufficiency. We offer courses in parenting, financial management, career coaching, and personal development among others, as well as help with continuing education. Upon graduation from our program, families have at least $1,000 in savings and steady employment. Learn more.
