Summer Read & Feed Program

Learn More: The children in Wellroot’s Family Housing program rely on free & reduced lunches during the school year, and we are working to find lunches during the summer breaks, while also promoting reading. We are calling it our “Summer Read & Feed.”

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning estimates that more than 60 percent of children under 18 risk losing access to the free- or reduced-price meals they rely on during the school year. The children in Wellroot’s Family Housing Program rely on these free & reduced lunches during the school year.

Children without a summer reading routine can lose one to three months of the reading skills they spent the previous school year building. This loss is a long-term, cumulative loss—once students lose reading ability over the summer, they rarely catch back up. Help us promote summer reading by providing books with their lunches.

What to bring?

  • Your group can sign-up to bring enough food for the 10-15 children to have 5 lunches that week. Please do not assembled these lunches.
  • Some lunch ideas are bread, sandwich items, peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna, fresh fruit, vegetables, low-sugar juice boxes, etc.
  • Collect new and gently used books from your church or organization.
  • Lunches for the week should be dropped off on your designated Monday between 8:30am-11:30am to allow our staff enough time to deliver the meals.

Upon sign-up a member of our team will confirm the number of children, ages and final logistics with you. Please contact cultivate@wellroot.org to learn more or sign-up.
