When Shanqual talks about her life today, there’s a calm confidence in her voice. But getting here wasn’t easy.
Before connecting with Wellroot, she was carrying the weight of financial stress, housing instability, and the lingering impact of experiencing chronic homelessness growing up. Like so many parents, she was doing everything she could to care for her family, but without stable housing or a strong support system, the path forward felt overwhelming.
That’s when she was connected to Wellroot’s Family Housing program.
Generational trauma doesn’t disappear overnight. It shows up in how we react to stress, how we trust others, how we see ourselves, and how we parent.
Through Wellroot’s Family Housing program, Shanqual was surrounded by a team committed to walking alongside her as she addressed not just the immediate crisis, but the deeper roots beneath it.
Wellroot’s Family Housing program provides temporary housing and wrap-around support to families facing homelessness or imminent risk of homelessness. Families are given not just a place to stay, but the tools and coaching they need to move toward long-term stability; things like parenting classes, financial management, and career coaching.
Shanqual, a recent graduate of Wellroot Family Services’ Family Housing program, learned the organization would cover the remaining fees for her Certified Nursing Assistant license.
For Shanqual, that first step into stable housing was about more than four walls. It was the moment she could finally exhale. Instead of worrying where her family would sleep, she could begin to focus on bigger questions like how to create a different future for her children and break generational patterns.
Today, with stability under her feet, Shanqual is focused on building a future defined not by crisis, but by possibility.
“Her story is proof that when you provide a family with stability, support, and a place to call home, transformation is possible,” says Wellroot CEO Allison Ashe.
