Wellroot’s Healthy Families North Georgia Program Expands

By July 26, 2023June 27th, 2024No Comments

Cheryl, our dedicated Healthy Families Support Specialist, shares a joyful moment with Najja and her son during a home visitation, exemplifying the heart of our mission at Wellroot Family Services.

Wellroot’s Healthy Families North Georgia Program is expanding its reach from Hall County to Gwinnett County, significantly impacting the community. This program focuses on promoting healthy child development, preventing abuse and neglect, and providing in-home support to expectant mothers or those with newborns. Following the research-based Healthy Families America® (HFA) home visiting model, the program emphasizes relationship-building and family-centered care.

Mothers enrolled in Healthy Families receive weekly home visits from a Wellroot Family Support Specialist. These visits concentrate on attachment, developmental milestones, and family support for the first three years of the child’s life.
Impressed by the program’s success in Hall County and driven by the goal to reduce infant mortality rates, the Gwinnett County Health Department has invited Wellroot to expand its services. After starting in Buford, Georgia, in the summer of 2022, Wellroot plans to extend its reach throughout Gwinnett County in 2023.

The story of Najja, a 19-year-old mother who faced significant challenges after dropping out of high school to care for her newborn, exemplifies the benefit of the Healthy Families Program. Fortunately, Najja discovered Healthy Families and immediately applied for assistance. Once enrolled, Najja met her Wellroot support specialist, Cheryl.

Najja’s son enjoys a playful moment.

During weekly visits, Cheryl provided Najja with vital support, connected her to financial resources, taught parenting skills, and addressed specific concerns like sleep regression and ear infections. With Cheryl’s guidance, Najja accessed the Childcare and Parent Services (CAPS) program. This critical step enabled her to pursue her education while ensuring her son attended a quality daycare. Now, with resources from Wellroot supporters, she is building a foundation for a brighter future for her and her son.

The expansion of Healthy Families provides more moms like Najja and families the crucial support they need during a critical child development stage. Through donor support, partnerships with community organizations, and the dedication of trained specialists, Wellroot will continue to promote child well-being, prevent abuse and neglect, and empower families to thrive.
